Current projects

Transnational History of the German National Library (Deutsche Bibliothek) Frankfurt a.M., 1946–1990

Since its funding in 1946, the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt am Main seemed to aim at storing the German national culture and knowledge published in print. Yet the project came with many implicit presuppositions that made it a much more complicated venture. Experiences of the Second World War and the Holocaust – both far from being fully past when the library planning started – strongly impacted on German librarians and politicians on the ground, much as on American occupation forces on the premises and on former exiles who partly, if hesitantly, engaged in the endeavour. What is more, global political divides left their marks in the historical scene as most library proponents in the American occupation zone and in early West Germany liked to think of themselves as cultural Cold Warriors, containing the much distrusted prestige of the German Library at Leipzig (from 1912), now a hallmark of East-German state socialism. Over the years, other major trends left their imprints on the Frankfurt Library, such as, first, West German dynamics – e.g. from silencing the National Socialist period to gradually confronting the fascist years and from merely watching to appropriating democracy – and, second, West-East German relations or more transatlantic developments of these decades – e.g. from antagonism to reapproach during Détente. The Frankfurt book stocks and stacks partly mirrored broader political currents and partly became a laboratory of German knowledge storage and culture memory in their own right. Thereby the Library could not help but turning into a significant political site of 20th c. history.

U.S.-American Philanthropies in 20th century Europe

U.S. American Philanthropy of the Carnegie Endowment, the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations in Western Europe from the 1920s to the 1970s was a multipolar political endeavour of science and scientific diplomacy. The varied emerging social sciences served as its intellectual, social and political vehicles: Philanthropists and European academics alike raised high expectations when it came to solving social problems and anticipating future dynamics of western societies based on social science expertise. In that sense, philanthropy was produced and received as a tool to master sweeping change and accelerated transition especially in the industrialized west. If U.S. philanthropists led the way in terms of abundant financial resources for funding, Europeans were not just at the receiving end but found their own ways to claim symbolic knowledge capital and broker both funding and scientific practice. Thus scientific philanthropy is a highly symptomatic part of comparable transatlantic histories of knowledge exchange in the 20th c.
